In a landmark development for pediatric healthcare in Balochistan, Sheikh Zayed Hospital Quetta successfully conducted its first pediatric cardiac surgery on May 25, 2024. This pioneering procedure marks a significant step forward for the province, ensuring that children with heart diseases no longer need to travel to other provinces for critical medical treatment. The inaugural surgery, a cardiac pads procedure, was performed under a collaborative initiative between the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) Karachi and Sheikh Zayed Hospital.
This partnership formalized through a memorandum of understanding, aims to provide free treatment and surgeries for children suffering from heart conditions in Balochistan. The collaboration began on February 17, 2024, with outpatient services commencing on March 9, and culminated in this groundbreaking surgery.
“This is a historic moment for Balochistan,” said Dr. Ali Ahmad, the chief cardiologist at Sheikh Zayed Hospital. “For the first time, we can offer life-saving cardiac surgeries to children within our province, bringing immense relief to countless families.”
Prior to this development, the absence of specialized pediatric cardiac care facilities in Balochistan forced parents to seek treatment in distant provinces and major cities, placing significant financial and emotional strain on families.
